The nation of Israel was called to be, among other things, a light to the Gentiles. Just after Jesus' birth elderly Simeon had his eyes opened to the wonderful fulfillment in the Light of Life, and offered his song of satisfaction before Mary and Joseph and the newborn babe. This message prays the prayer: "You have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives..."
