What Jacob Knew
I told you Thursday I'd tell you what I said once I got home. Here it is, word for word — the parts I'm proud of and the parts I'm not. This is the sermon behind the sermon: what fear and grief did to my preaching after 9/11, what it took twenty-five years to see clearly, and what my nine-year-old son already knew that I didn't. Luke 9:51-56, and the fire certainty always wants to call down.
Series Information

Twenty-five years ago I was on a plane to the Middle East when the towers fell. Two weeks after I got home, I stood up here and preached something I've been ashamed of ever since. This two-part series is the full story — the trip I've never told all the way through, and the sermon I gave afterward that took me twenty-five years to understand and confess. Part one is the story. Part two is the reckoning.
