Reaching Out in Mexico

Countryside has been blessed with the opportunity to serve in Carmen Serdan for many years. Those who have gone have been impacted in many wonderful ways. Not only do we have the ability to minister while at The Mission, the Lord uses the kids who live there to speak and touch each of our hearts in a special way.

Located less than a hundred miles from San Diego, The Mission at Carmen Serdan transports us into a different world in culture and lifestyle. Situated in a part of rural Baja where horses and donkeys are as popular as cars, The Mission is a place to enjoy and capture simplicity, serve others as “unto the Lord” and grow in your Christian walk… all in a desert setting not unlike the land of Israel.

More than twenty kids call The Mission “home.” They have some very severe difficulties, yet God rewards our attempt to tend the fatherless. Here the need is in simple and practical tasks. Care for the children, help in cooking and cleaning, tending the outside facility and an occasional building project. We go prepared to do anything no matter how insignificant it might be. Our desire is to serve alongside and be a blessing to the children and the workers at The Mission.

You can expect many familiar aspects of life, yet many are different. Mexico is a different country and culture. Some of The Mission’s rules and our outreach guidelines are reflective of a need to meet expectations of that culture. Dress is kept modest and footwear is a must. The days start early… so it’s wise to ‘turn in’ early.

The desert environment lends itself well to enjoying a season of special devotional times before the day begins. We always capture what The Mission has to offer in this. Planned times of worship and fellowship in the mornings are always a part of our day. The morning time is key as the desert sun drains one’s energy quickly. The star-filled Baja nights are ideal for devotional and reflective times.

At Countryside, we pray that you will seek the Lord about serving in this very special ministry. Some who have served short-term in the past, have actually returned to The Mission as staff members later in life. Is the Lord speaking to you?
