Salt is Good
Modern salt is pure, and it doesn’t lose its flavor. Our thanks to Morton and others. On the other hand, salt in Jesus’ day (the Ancient Near East) wasn’t at all pure, and if it got mixed with too much of some other substance (i.e. dirt, manure), it had no flavor at all. Using this as a grand picture of disciples following Jesus, He metes out more than a simple illustration. Salt is good — and with salt, Jesus is referring to authentic, effective disciples
